Beauty & Health Publishing
Beauty & Health Publishing was a small, family-owned publishing company that had cornered a niche in the market at the time - publications for the beauty industry. Starting with Nails Plus for nail technicians, then Salon Plus, by the time I was recruited they had just launched an ambitious new title called Spa Plus, which was to tap into the emerging trend for spas and health clubs.
My official title was Features Editor, but in reality I did a bit of everything from writing features for all three magazines to sub-editing, commissioning and
forward features planning.
I thoroughly enjoyed the job, and was heavily involved with Spa Plus. I went out with the team to trade shows and events, trying to research new ideas and stories, set up interviews with some interesting people, and visited spas, gyms, health clubs and even an ayurvedic clinic in West London. I was given facials, was starved for a week, and took part in fitness classes all in the name of investigative journalism.
Sadly, the project was too ambitious and the company had to make about a quarter of the staff redundant in 2001. I carried on working for them on a freelance basis until 2002, and the company ceased to exist by 2003.
